First of all, I know plenty could argue that after only one week into the season it may not be the time to start banging out the stats bets but this Saturday over in the small town of Shropshire their could be fireworks ready to be set off.
Last season Shrewsbury finished the season accumulating the most average fouls per game (19.1) and the most tackles per game (14.9) giving them an impressive 70 yellow cards and 3 red cards along the way. If there is one thing Sam Rickets team did well last season, that was letting the opposition know that they were not in for an easy game, especially from a physical standpoint.
This season does not look to have started any different to how last season finished and in their first game last Saturday against Portsmouth they made sure their club secretary who handles the booking fines would never need to be furloughed again as they went on to accumulate 6 yellow cards and 1 red for their troubles.
On the other side of the dugout their opposition for this week are the Cobblers, Keith Curle’s men make the 100 mile trip up the M6 to New Meadow that will be one of the ten English clubs this week hosting ‘pilot’ matches and allowing 1000 lucky supporters into the ground.
Northampton who were promoted last season via the play offs to league one, managed to do so whilst racking up the most disciplinary fines in the league finishing with a whopping 86 yellow cards and 4 reds, that was 12 more yellow cards than the second place team.
The last time these two teams met in 2018 in front of a slightly larger crowd, they witnessed a few fireworks going off with two red cards and 4 yellows and I am hoping tomorrow will be a repeat of that show.
The man lighting the fireworks in the middle tomorrow is Neil Hair who last season dug his hands into his pockets 83 times for yellow cards and 4 times for reds in 27 matches, let’s just hope he has not forgot his matches tomorrow.
