I for one didn’t expect both of these two sides to have winning records coming into week 6 but here we are!
The Bears are 5-1 and impressed me with their TNF win over Tom Brady and the Bucs. Their Pass D stepped up again to keep TB12 to only one TD and are the leagues best in pass completion % against and with their star pass rusher Khalil Mack posting his first multiple Sack game of the season could be starting to heat up which only helps their secondary but their Run D has to improve after giving up over 100 yards to Ronald Jones and with Mike Davis running the ball well for the Panthers he will be looking to have himself a day if they can’t improve. Nick Foles again got the better of Tom Brady last week but this pass defense in Carolina offers another challenge entirely as they don’t give up many deep plays but luckily for Chicago is Foles’ preference to throw the ball underneath so a change in game plan won’t be necessary and the biggest beneficiary since Foles took over the offense has been Allen Robinson who has yet to have under 10 targets or less than 90 receiving yards when Foles has been throwing the football.
The Panthers were 0-2 after two weeks and had just lost their best player to injury for 6 weeks… since then they’ve won 3 on the bounce and whilst Mike Davis has been fantastic in McCaffrey’s absence a lot of the success on Offense has to be credited to Teddy Bridgewater and the passing game, Bridgewater threw for over 300 yards and two TD’s in last weeks win and has a pass completion % of 73 and has a 2:1 TD / INT ratio on the season, the presence of Robby Anderson in this offense has been a game changer for them, in four of his five games as a Panther he has 99+ yards and has back to back 8 reception games. On defense the it’s similar to the Bears, their pass D has been successful in stopping big plays down the field but the run D hasn’t been so tight, allowing Todd Gurley to run for over 120 yards and a TD at over 8 yards a carry! David Montgomery will be hoping to have similar success and get this Bears running game back on track.
