Jags Tanking for Trevor.
WINNERS – TENNESSEE TITANS:
Titans surprised most people with their deep playoff run last year, including me! I had them finishing 4th in this division last year and they were the team I was the most off on based on my pre-season rankings from last year but I did have them beating the Ravens in the playoffs.. (find you an analyst who called that) I like the pieces the Titans have on defense and the new addition of Jadeveon Clowney should see them take a step forward this year. On offense it’s all about Derrick Henry and the run game with sporadic deep bombs to A. J. Brown, now that’s an extremely layman explanation on it but in essence it’s basically the Titans offense and for opposition defenses there’s a difference between knowing what an offense is going to do and being able to stop it (ask Earl Thomas if you don’t believe me) so whilst teams might know in principle how to stop the Titans, in reality it’s a very different proposition.
BEST CASE: 12-4
WORST CASE: 8-8
2ND PLACE – INDIANAPOLIS COLTS:
The acquisitions of Phillip Rivers and DeForest Buckner took the Colts from possible re-build candidate to a win now team. Putting a seasoned veteran in Phillip Rivers behind the best Offensive Line in Football should get every squeeze of what he has left out of him, to help this cause the Colts took two offensive studs in the 2nd round of this year’s NFL Draft picking USC’s talented pass catcher, Michael Pittman Jr and Wisconsin’s highly touted runner, Jonathan Taylor add these two to an offense which already has TY Hilton and Marlon Mack I’m expecting the Colts to be able to put some points up this year if Rivers’ arm strength doesn’t completely fall off a cliff. Ultimately, I think they have some nice pieces on both sides of the ball, but I think they are a few pieces off being a real ‘win now’ team.
BEST CASE: 10-6
WORST CASE: 7-9
3rd PLACE – HOUSTON TEXANS:
Is Deshaun Watson expected to do it all by himself now that All Pro WR, Deandre Hopkins is out of town? Sure Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb have been brought in to help replace him and Will Fuller is a dangerous playmaker when healthy but that’s just the problem all 3 of these guys who’re expected to carry the burden left by Hopkins have very real injury concerns, they acquired a running back as part of that Hopkins trade who has struggled in recent years and without a first round pick in this year’s draft to help strengthen I worry that they’re expecting Watson to do too much on his own especially with a first time play caller taking control of the offense. On Defense it’s the ageing JJ Watt and some guys, not to say this a bad defense its just not what it once was and league average at best. I see them taking a step back this year and maybe an organizational re-think to come, possibly starting with main man, Bill O’Brien.
BEST CASE: 9-7
WORST CASE: 6-10
4TH PLACE – JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS:
Maybe the worst organization in the NFL right now the Jaguars are looking like they’re planning to “Tank for Trevor” and lose out the season to secure the #1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft so they can select Clemson QB, Trevor Lawrence but it could’ve been so very different, only a few years ago they had a lead in the AFC Championship game against a Brady lead Patriots and one thing was evident, they were a win now roster with a stifling, league best defense leading their charge but at arguably the most important position in all of sports they were rolling out Blake Bortles a man who as of right now is out of the league at the ripe old age of 28(!) all they had to do was take some of the money they decided to had Bortles in a ridiculous contract extension and give it to a veteran free agent QB who only needed to be league average starter and the Jags could have a Lombardi on their shelf right now but alas, no, they decided to roll with Bortles which lead to some of their superstar defense becoming disgruntled or just too expensive once it came around to contact time and the whole thing fell apart. Jalen Ramsey was traded away last season, Yannick Ngakoue was practically given away to the Minnesota Vikings and starting Running Back, Leonard Fournette was literally given away, released by the Jags to then be picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccs. Jacksonville do have some nice pieces, CJ Henderson & K’Lavon Chaisson were added in the first round of the 2020 Draft and both guys were high on my big board whilst 2nd round pick, Laviska Shenault Jr is electric and could be a real offensive weapon add these with guys like Josh Allen, Myles Jack and DJ Chark Jr and there is no denying there is talent on this Jags roster, just not enough of it at the moment and I see a heavy losing season, a top 3 pick an organizational blow up coming.
