AFC West Preview.

It’s Still The Chiefs Kingdom.

It really is the Chiefs and everyone else in this division. Patrick Mahomes is the best QB in football and this’ll only be his third season as a starter! Their offense Is predicated on speed and with Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Mecole Hardman as their Wide Receiver options they have Defensive Co-Ordinators up at night trying to figure out how to stop them, add in arguably the best Tight End in Football, Travis Kelce and the pass catching Back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire whom they drafted with their first round pick this year and it’s going to be almost impossible to stop these guys putting points on the board, if you’re going to have any chance you’re going to need to be able to put pressure on Mahomes but the Chiefs return an O-Line which progressed down the stretch last year and has added both draft picks and free agents to it’s rotation so defenses are really going to have to earn every single stop they get against this Andy Reid offense. Chiefs win the division at a canter.

Imagine if Aaron Rodgers had John Elway as his GM! Whilst poor old Aaron can’t buy a weapon, second year QB, Drew Lock has been given some extra firepower, already boasting receiving options such as Courtland Sutton and Noah Fant the Broncos added highly rated Alabama Receiver, Jerry Jeudy and explosive Penn State pass catcher, KJ Hamler with their first two picks in this years draft as well as picking up Melvin Gordon in the offseason as a FA after he left the divisional rival, Chargers, pairing him with Philip Lindsey gives Lock a nice 1-2 punch in his backfield in what I expect to be a much improved offense and to see Drew Lock take steps forward this year. What I’m excited to see is their defense, HC Vic Fangio is a defensive powerhouse and last year had these guys as a top 12 unit and that was without Bradley Chubb who will be back to cause havoc this year. This is a team who lost some games last year that they simply shouldn’t have, 5 of their 9 losses came by 1 score (8 points) or less and 2 of the games they lost by more than a score were to the Chiefs. I’m higher than most on the Broncos this year and wouldn’t be surprised if the Broncos post a winning record this year after going 7-9 in 2019.

Vegas finally get a team and a big, beautiful stadium and it’s the Raiders on of the most storied franchises in the NFL andddddd no one can come watch them play! Covid sucks. But It’s not all doom and gloom for the newly minted Las Vegas Raiders, they seem to have a Head Coach and General Manager working in harmony, two very talented offensive pieces in Josh Jacobs and Henry Ruggs both courtesy of Alabama and a secondary with some young talent there. The off-season acquisition of Linebacker, Cory Littleton was huge for the Raiders in what was an area of real need but I cant shake the feeling that they’re maybe a year and a couple pieces away from challenging for a Wild Card spot that being said I am expecting to see improvement across the board from the Raiders starting with utilising Josh Jacobs more in the Pass game and getting the ball in Henry Ruggs’ hands as often as possible, this is a guy who ran a 4.27 at the NFL Combine and was my #1 WR coming out of this year’s class, he could be Tyreek Hill 2.0 and a legitimate #1 Receiver in this league.

It’s not that I dislike the Chargers it’s just that I find it difficult to see where they will win enough games to finish anywhere other than bottom of the pile, Tyrod Taylor isn’t the most inspiring of QB’s and I’m not sure first round draft pick, Justin Herbert is ready to lead an NFL team if he needs too half way through the year, on offense they have two legit outside weapon receivers in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams but I have to wonder how often the guy they have under centre can get them the ball. Austin Ekeler is still one of the most underrated Backs in the league even after a monster 2019 campaign which earned him a new contract, they even upgraded the Offensive Line adding big men, Brian Bulaga, a FA after leaving Green Bay and acquiring Guard, Trai Turner in a trade with the Carolina Panthers, If they had something just a little better under centre I’d be a lot higher on the Chargers. On the other side of the football the defensive line is good, bookended by two of the best pass rushers in the league, Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa who the Chargers locked up with a new mega contract to keep him in town. The loss for most of if not all of the season of Safety, Derwin James is a huge loss and if the man taken with their second of two first round draft picks, Kenneth Murray Jr doesn’t hit the ground running you start to wonder where that run stopping second level defender comes from here. I think it’s between the Chargers and the Raiders on who’ll be propping up this division but ultimately I had the Raiders taking a game more but the Chargers have some ex Bills (my team) on their side,  HC, Anthony Lynn and QB, Tyrod Taylor both had somewhat successful stints in Buffalo and I’ll always root for those guys so I’m hoping they prove me wrong here.
