NEW ORLEANS SAINTS @ DETROIT LIONS

Don’t think many had this one down to be a battle of 1-2 teams at the start of the year but that’s what we’ve got here as the Saints travel to Detroit to take on the Lions.

The Saints lost a score at home to Aaron Rodgers and the Packers on Sunday Night Football in week 3 and after their surprise loss at the hands of the Raiders find themselves on a two-game skid. A lot has been made of Drew Brees’ arm and his seeming inability to get the ball downfield with any velocity and rightly so as I just don’t believe he still has the arm talent to do so but with a weapon like Alvin Kamara in the backfield and short passing game they have a way around Brees’ shortcomings although the return of Michael Thomas who is ‘OUT’ for this one cannot come soon enough for the Saints. The Defense isn’t a pretty sight, they’ve given up back to back 100 yard receiving days, are yet to keep an opposing RB under 60 yards and somewhat surprisingly have given up a TD to a Tight End in all three contests, here’s looking at you TJ Hockenson…

The Lions pulled off a shock to beat the Cardinals in week 3 to finally get their season up and running but needed three interceptions to get it done, they’re not going to be able to win the turnover battle by that kind of margin every week so they need another plan and in my opinion, running Adrian Peterson 20+ times a game for 3.5 yards a carry isn’t going to get it done. They have a very talented rookie runner in DeAndre Swift but so far have failed to utilise him on the ground instead preferring to use him as a receiving weapon but with Kenny Golladay, TJ Hockenson and Marvin Jones there are plenty of options for Matt Stafford in the passing game and he’d be smart to use these weapons against a Saints pass D which is struggling right now.

The Saints are beat up across the board, as well as missing Michael Thomas they’ll also be without star Cornerback Marshon Lattimore and the guy who plays across from him Janoris Jenkins, starting Tight End Jared Cook, starting Offensive Guard Andrus Peat and EDGE Marcus Davenport. All of the players listed are huge losses for the Saints and really evens up this ball game to close to a pick’em in my opinion. The Saints are 3 point favourites heading into this but I think this is going to be a closely fought battle. I think I’m going to take the home side underdogs to win a shootout but this could go either way.
