The 3-1 Raiders suffered their first loss of the season on MNF, and they have the chance to get right at home against the 2-2 Bears. Can Justin Fields get the Bears above .500 for the first time this season, or will Derek Carr get his Raiders back to winning ways?
The Bears beat the Lions last week to move to 2-2, and there were huge improvements from Justin Fields and the offense with Bill Lazor calling the plays instead of Matt Nagy. Life will be harder this week though as Chicago will be without David Montgomery. The Running Back was the stand out performer on this offense through 4 weeks and without him in the backfield to help the rookie passer I wouldn’t be surprised to see Fields use his legs more and more. Fields’ U/O 29.5 Passing Attempts for this game seems high, he’s had 20 or less in every game he’s played so to increase his previous high by 50% seems irresponsible and even without Monty to run the ball, I’m going to bet against Fields throwing the ball 30+ times this early in his career.
The Raiders found themselves down once again on MNF but were unable to pull a rabbit out of the hat this time as they fell for the first time this season to their divisional rival Chargers. Derek Carr and the offense are playing good football and the return of Josh Jacobs, another week healthier, should only make the offense better. Jacobs has only played twice this season due to injury and is yet to have more than 13 rushing attempts in a single game, and whilst I’m confident that’ll change at some point this year I’m not so sure a game against a good Bears run defense is the time to do it. On defense and it’s definitely the weaker side of the ball for Vegas, they’re still not talented enough in the secondary and if it wasn’t for Maxx Crosby and Yannick Ngakoue we’d probably be looking at the least talented defense in all of football. Although not great players, Johnathan Abram and Denzel Perryman are at least strong and willing tacklers. Perryman has double-digit tackles in every game this season whilst Abram has made 7 or more combined tackles & assists in each game.
The Raiders are the better football team, the Raiders are at home and yet I can’t help but feel like the Bears are going to find a way to win the game even without David Montgomery.
