Two of the best teams in the AFC meet in La La Land as the 3-1 Chargers, fresh off back to back divisional wins, welcome the Browns, who have won three straight since dropping a close one to the Chiefs on opening day. Will it be Baker or Herbert leading their team to 4-1 and in the top tier of the AFC standings?
Cleveland are mightily unlucky not to be the only unbeaten side remaining in the AFC. They lost a close game in Week 1 to the Chiefs but haven’t missed a beat since riding a three-game winning streak into this contest. Baker Mayfield has struggled a little this year compared to how he finished the 2020 campaign and his problems connecting with OBJ do bring questions, but ultimately Cleveland want to run the ball and they run the ball well, through four games no team has really stopped them from doing what they want on the ground, can the Chargers slow down Nich Chubb and Kareem Hunt?
Justin Herbert looks like a superstar doesn’t he? The big arm, the ability to make plays outside of the offense and the hair, the kid has it all! He also has Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler which I’m sure helps him no end. Head Coach Brandon Staley trusts his young QB and puts the game in his hands when it really matters, this is evident by not only the 4th quarter against the Chiefs but also by the fact that Herbert has thrown at least 38 passes in each game so far this season, a big number for a second-year passer. This pass-first attitude has its benefits in the run game too, Austin Ekeler has gone for at least 50 yards on the ground in every contest so far and this is part because teams can’t stack the box against the Chargers which in turn gives Ekeler favourable looks whenever they do decide to run the ball.
I think these are two teams destined for the playoffs and they may well see each other down the road this season, but for me, the Chargers are the better football team and I think they get the home win here.
